Book Review: Adulthood Rites and Imago (the last two books in the Xenogenesis trilogy

Title: Adulthood Rites
Author: Octavia E Butler
Series: Xenogenesis Trilogy, Book 2

Characters: 9/10
Atmosphere/Setting: 8/10
Writing Style: 10/10
Plot: 9/10
Intrigue: 10/10
Logic/Relationships: 10/10
Enjoyment: 9/10

=65/7=9.28= Five Stars

Review: This is book 2 in the series. It was really gripping. I could hardly stop reading to go to sleep. I have a hard time summarizing books, so I thought I'd just paste in the summary on the book's Goodreads page:

The futures of both mankind and an alien species rest in the hands of one hybrid son in the award-winning science fiction author’s masterful sequel to Dawn.

Nuclear war had nearly destroyed mankind when the Oankali came to the rescue, saving humanity—but at a price. The Oankali survive by mixing their DNA with that of other species, and now on Earth they have permitted no child to be born without an Oankali parent. The first true hybrid is a boy named Akin—son of Lilith Iyapo— and to the naked eye he looks human, for now. He is born with extraordinary sensory powers, understanding speech at birth, speaking in sentences at two months old, and soon developing the ability to see at the molecular level. More powerful than any human or Oankali, he will be the architect of both races’ intergalactic future. But before he can carry this new species into the stars, Akin must decide which unlucky souls will stay behind.

At once a coming-of-age story, science fiction adventure, and philosophical exploration, Butler’s ambitious and breathtaking novel ultimately raises the question of what it means to be human.

This is your classic sci-fi story and I love it and highly recommend it!

The usual amount of strange things in place - Early May 02025

Let us begin with continuations in the war against the public receiving accurate, unbiased information. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was told it would receive zero support from the U.S. government, in the same veins of executive orders that proclaim that the executive has the real power of the purse and Congressional appropriations and their amounts mean nothing to his whims. Like other such orders, the actual validity and power of the executive to do this is suspect at best and nonexistent in reality. And, of course, there's always a group of ghouls ready to step in and take over - A spokesmodel for the administration said the conservative propaganda network OAN would take over providing content for Voice of America broadcasts. Swift backlash about the degraded quality and obvious partisan slant of OAN followed from those who actually understand and know what Voice of America broadcasts were supposed to do.

A federal judge granted an injunction against the current administration's intent to zero out the funding of the Institute for Museum and Library Services. With the news, coming just a little after the person currently in charge of IMLS indicated he wanted libraries to be an essential part of propaganda efforts, and strongly suggesting that the people suing would win their case on the merits, there is now flux on funding, but also, a need to have Congresscritters continue to insist upon a budget that contains funds for IMLS in fiscal year 2026.

The administrator dismissed the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, by e-mail after the injunctions were announced, because of pressure against her by people who think that a Black woman is completely unqualified to do anything that might have white people subordinate to her, and possibly in petty revenge for being told no that he couldn't simply zero out the IMLS budget. When questioned on the matter, a spokesmodel for the executive proclaimed that Dr. Hayden was involved in unacceptable DEI and in promoting harmful materials to children, proving that the spokesmodel and her bosses have zero idea of what the Library of Congress actually does.

The Copyright Office dropped a pre-print of a report that excoriated LLMs and is poised to rule that the widespread copyright violation and stealing of copyrighted works involved in creating datasets for LLMs are, in fact, widespread copyright violations and not simply the cost of doing business. Almost immediately after, the administration dismissed the Register of Copyrights, which could be merely convenient timing or could also be a revenge firing for the Copyright Office telling all the techbros that they do have to respect the copyright law and the copyrights of the people they're stealing from.

Persons appointed by the Executive who claim to be the new Librarian of Congress and Register of Copyrights were turned away by the actual interim Librarian of Congress and Register of Copyrights and the staff of the Library of Congress. Because those people who were supposedly appointed are very likely not to be the people in the job according to statute.

All of these actions, however, are things that the Congress could possibly assert that it, nor the Executive, have exclusive or primary control over, and therefore tell the Executive to pound sand. This, however, requires a Congress that actually wants to maintain its independence, rather than functioning as the Duma of the United States.

As usual, plenty of US Politics, but many other objects as well )

Going out for this post, the legacy of Dave Brubeck is in good music, yes, but also in a staunch refusal to allow segregation to break up his groups or to prevent Black people from enjoying jazz wherever in the venue they wanted to. (Older piece, but also, lots of people say May 4th, or 5/4 in the US nomenclature, is Dave Brubeck day, based on his iconic Take Five.)

A takedown of the Tesla Cybertruck that focuses entirely on how much it fails at being a truck, doing truck tasks, and fostering a healthy truck culture.

And Studio Ghibli releasing hundreds of images form their films for people to use within the boundaries of common sense and for individuals to further enjoy the films. Which is lovely, because of the lushness of the images in the films, but also because this is a continual shot against people using plagiarism machines to replicate their style (poorly.) and others who do not find these films worthwhile on their own

Checkpoints

I think that once global War of the Visions shuts down at the end of the month, I won't have to keep printing the staple of my last few years - my login checksheet. These have also doubled as chore sheets, etc. but at their heart they're just me keeping track of games. And of the games I'll have left, three are in maintenance mode, one is private server, one is Granblue, two are ancient but alive, and one is Eternal. Like, I can clatter through those okay and if I miss any of them it's not a huge deal. (And I can trust myself not to forget Eternal.)

But I am a list-maker anyway, so I might just repurpose the checksheets in general? It's amazing how much stuff I'll forget if I don't have a basic list with me. I get distracted very, very easily.

Wrote something for [community profile] femgiftboxes and might try for a couple other things since there's been another delay. There are five empty boxes right now, including mine. It's not incredibly clear, whoops, but I'm good with icons for all my requests...

I wrote a few bits of short fiction on Fedi earlier in the week, too. Slowly shaking the marbles loose.

Started watching the Busou Shinki anime, which I must've bought because 'Busou Shinki' sounded familiar at the time. And looking them up, yes! I remember being oddly charmed by them back when they first came out and rather wanted one but never got one. They are of course long-discontinued aside from some expensive collaboration girlpla kits, but there are also a few on Suruga-ya. I'm not attached to any one character, just the general idea, so I'll probably pick whoever is affordable to snag at some point. (The anime is cute enough so far, too.)

Finished up McGillis's Schwalbe Graze; pictures later when it's not the greyest day. Started on the SD Heroes Strike Freedom. It's an SD kit so it's not super-complicated but already I've run into sticker-hell and am just going to paint a couple of bits. ^^;; I apparently don't own a plain black thick Gundam marker, so paint it is. (Weird!) Flauros will be next after, and then the white Alto + wings. Then Plutone, since I had the absolute luck to snag one. So here is a poll for, like, no sooner than June. As always, voting based on quick searches is encouraged and appreciated. (I'd link more but the Gundam Wiki is unfortunately kind of a mess. I suppose I could do store links? Hmm.)

Weekend Cooking: Stuffed Curried Mango Peppers

To prepare the mango peppers for stuffing, cut off the tops and remove the seeds. Let stand in salt water until required. Then prepare plenty of rice according to No. 52. Keep in a warm place until required.

Fry Hamburg steak with onion and curry powder according to No. 9. A pound of steak will be plenty for a nice big dish of peppers. Use no water in this mince, but when the meat and onions are partially fried add a cupful of the boiled rice, and mix all together. Stuff the peppers with this mixture of rice and meat.

Put in a roaster and cover with tomato sauce. This sauce may be made from any tinned tomato soup, diluted and more highly seasoned, or it may be made from stewed tomatoes from which the seeds and skins[28] have been removed. Make sauce a little thick. Bake very slowly or steam. Serve with the remainder of the rice.

This is such a hearty dish that one needs prepare nothing else to be served with it.

1986, and warning this might be a little disjointed. Well. 26 tabs. And I am going to attempt to tackle them all to show why I call this year so disjointed. (My life literally was torn to hell and back in this year, and I buried myself in books and music more than usual)

longer than usual )

So, anyone want to guess my fave? It's definitely the one of my icon for this post.

Mostly online shopping...

Vol.3 Yuri Comic Magazine Galette- Special English Edition is running on Kickstarter and there are a few copies of Vol 1 & 2 left if you're very quick.

Still debating Tenchi Muyo!: American Omnibus Edition because it's such an unexpected project? I had all sorts of dribs and drabs of various floppy-versions of manga/manga-inspired series once upon a time and I wonder if I had any of what's ending up in here. I am not a huge Tenchi fan but I'm familiar-enough and I kinda want to see what happens and what else this new company might be doing. (Also, like with a lot of unexpected KS stuff, sometimes it's all worth the price of admission.)

Also need to decide on the next set of Shadowverse cards. What I should do is go through everything, keep all the faves, and bulk-unload the rest mostly for space. Also keeping a weather-eye on the Final Fantasy Magic cards, which will probably be ridiculously difficult to acquire for awhile if not in general. Might have to just watch at the grocery store? IDEK. And apparently there's a Gundam game coming out over the summer, which I am cautiously optimistic about. (Heck, I might even play that.) There is also whatever multi-verse game that I keep seeing at the grocery store that has a Code Geass booster, what.

The Circle of Hobbies.

I also have two orders from different hobby shops that haven't shipped yet. One actually sent out a 'we're buried under orders right now, we haven't forgotten you' email, which was surprisingly nice. But that's also the shop that's kinda known for slow shipping. Like, you'll get your stuff and it'll be fine but while a lot of shops try for 2-3 day shipping, theirs is more like 5-7 days. (Which is fine, honestly, if you know that's their normal.)

On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

Or,

Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: Mace gets some interesting news from Vokara Che, Master Dooku heads back to Mandalore and is at peace with the death of his last padawan. On the legal front, the Trade Federation makes an offer to Queen Amidala that’s impossible to resist, which just might settle the Nabooians’ case against them. And it looks like Obi-Wan will be going undercover, investigating the clinic when Bail Prestor is detoxing.

What could go wrong?

As Days Go By

Spring has very much sprung, quite suddenly, and I daresay it's more like we've smashed immediately into early-summer. (This is not entirely a surprise; seasons mostly vanished about a decade ago.)

There hasn't been a ton of stuff worth noting, I suppose. Work has been relative quiet in its stupid; I am mostly working on small safety improvements like attempting to eliminate trip hazards and extension cords.

Outdoor hobby stuff hampered by ongoing rain-at-bad-times. Even when I took my mother to lunch on Saturday, sudden super-heavy rain storm. Every time things almost dry out enough to consider touchingwalking on grass, it pours and everything becomes terrible squish.(It was also still randomly very cold on Saturday! I tried to do some garage-cleaning but oof, too chilly! That will not be a problem this weekend!)
