Because this is an excerpt, it needs more explanation/backgrounding. The year is c. 1980. Sam has left New York City after taking a job offer to be a librarian in Baddeck, Nova Scotia -- a place where he spent his childhood summers. He’s not been back there since his father’s death ten year’s prior. He’s decided to move there for a few of reasons: to feel closer to his father, who’s memory is fading, to get away from an environment that he’s become less and less a part of and has made him more and more restless, and to begin a new life in a place where he was once happy. This excerpt takes place after, upon nearing his destination, he experiences car trouble. Being a Sunday, parts are unavailable for the vehicle, his father’s 57 Corvette. Gus, the owner of the service station, offers to drive Sam across the island to the summer house his father owned and which remained in the family.
With much thanks to
